In my former line of work, I deal with hundreds of computers and we get a lot of overheating GPUs which would shut itself down, taking the computer down too. A ghetto GPU fan mod is necessary to replace these dead or dying fans.
This ghetto GPU fan mod starts with AMD’s AMx CPU series cooler fans. During our quarterly clean-up, which includes dust cleaning, thermal paste re-application, any ‘ailing’ GPUs would be given a new lease of life with this mod.
The fan is powered by an adapter, (SATA to 3/4 pin) or by extension to a 3 pin fan header. The old fan is gutted out, and the new one is strapped on with cable ties or by glue. We not only save these GPUs with our routine dust bunnies elimination. We also save our mice and keyboards from being banged up with frustration when a computer shuts down due to overheating.
I’m going through old files of mine, combing through the pictures over the years. I’m going to upload more of the same in the coming days and weeks. Like this Frankenstein-ish hard disk cage I made, or this NVIDIA 8600 GTS fan addition.
