My Laptop

I bought my laptop on the 3rd of April in 2014. During purchase, I requested an extra RAM stick, and told the salesperson I’d take care of the Windows setup myself.

The other upgrades were a 9mm hard disk caddy, and an SSD drive for booting Windows. The hard disk caddy now holds the original 750GB hard disk, now occupying the DVD drive slot. Windows 7 was installed in the SSD, an upgrade from Windows 8, IMHO.

The battery was replaced in October 2019, and was the SSD in 2021. I went for a larger capacity doubling 120GB to 240GB. The laptop cooling fan was also replaced despite it was still working. I just felt it was a bit too warm for my liking.

My laptop isn’t just my road warrior, it also substitutes my main PC. If I want to get things done and cut distractions, I’d swap out the PC for the lappy.

Update

The slightly higher temperatures (50°C++ at idle) returned after two years (2023). Eventhough it is in specs, it’s discomforting and a bit too warm for my lap. I’m thinking to re-apply the thermal paste with a different brand. The previous fan may not be at fault even for the elevated temperatures. The battery is severely depleted now and gives no warning before shutting down despite showing a charge.

The left speaker is unusable now. I’ve also managed to damage the keyboard’s ribbon cable when re-applying the thermal paste. At least it’s a pretty white on black laptop now.
