Another half-marathon (HM), another record. This is my best HM ever, also the farthest I’ve ever ran in my life. I was gunning for 25 km after clocking good times at 5, 10 and 15 km. But the side stitching got so bad in the final three kilometres, I gave up trying to make it an even 22 km.
After several injuries, aggravating my bad knee, which included a slip and hitting it on the pavement, I came back strongly, consistently recording at least 100 km runs monthly. In August alone I logged in 318 km, and kept posting faster times in October.
Going back just a year, this kind of time would be unthinkable, or even the distance. As fit as I was before, the farthest run I did was 15 km, tops. And never at this pace, because after 10, 11 km, I would resort to slow walk/run back home from the park I run at.
One thing I’m still not doing is running uphill, to avoid hurting my knees, and to keep my heart rate comfortable. The exertion going up an incline is still something my body can’t take or sustain for long. The last time I tried this, my left knee protested and took me out for several weeks.
